My research is inspired by how variable, diverse, and beautiful the forest herbaceous layer can be, especially in Northeastern Deciduous Hardwood communities. What drives variation in spatial and compositional diversity across plant communities? What processes promote diversity across different spatial scales? Why don't herb communities recover, often even after restoration attempts? Using approaches from theoretical and spatial ecology, I take a combined empirical and modeling approach to answer these and similar questions.
